Assalamualaikum

Today I would like to briefly speak out of my opinion regarding MUET. Darn ! What is MUET? Its' Malaysian University English Test. I have taken this test as I was doing my Foundation TESL in UiTM Kuantan couple of years ago.

Yesterday I saw one of my lecturer stated that more than half of the students who're doing Foundation in Law failed to gain band 4 in MUET and it is one of the requirement for the students to further their studies in higher level IF they wanted to study LAW or TESL.

In my opinion... IN MY OPINION... you can't judge the students ability just with one TEST. Oh no! its FOUR test with speaking, listening, writing and reading. And another "Oh no!" because you can't be too stupid not to get band 4. Yea yea yea! Hell right! Getting band 4 is a piece of cake. Secret recipe cake I guess? Or my future fountain wedding cake? *yummy*

To be honest, my MUET result did not enlighten my world. I can still remember as I was sitting for the listening test. I was not feeling well. I kept coughing. I had fever at that time due to some hard work done for 2 weeks before that. I was too weak. Plus, my mom was not there at that moment. She was in Mekah for a couple of weeks. I coming out non stop and my face turned red as the cili padi. *spicy* I can see Yan looked at me and asked me either I'm doing good. Hey ! Do I need to tell this? The moment I felt my whole body is going to burst out? No no no.. MAJLIS PEPERIKSAAN MALAYSIA would not like to hear my story. They are only interested my with result. Is it their fault? Of course no. It is my fault. Totally my fault. For not taking care of myself. it is MY FAULT. No doubt !!!

Because of MUET, my TESL's friends went studying separately. Around of applause for those who managed to pursue their bachelor in TESL education. *tepuk amoi-amoi amai-amai*

There was one friend I still wonder what is he doing at this moment. He was quite brilliant. But I am not sure if he managed to continue his study or he stops just right there. *one story telling*

There were also my friends who were very fluent in English. Can't beat them. My english is too simple. I don't really have bombastic words cause I will always forget. *ka-ching* They were very fluent and speak better English but they do not have the chance to study TESL.

So, for those who have the ambition of studying Foundation in TESL or LAW. Prepare yourself from now on. Everything is going to be your responsibility. And your luck. Seriously? Luck? It is actually the will of God.

And MUET, for sending me to UiTM KBM (kota bandaraya Melaka) and MSU (Management and Science University). I should thank you and hug you tighly. *xoxo*

InshaaAllah... The best plan, is the plan of GOD
Allah s.w.t
The One and Only God.
Allahuakbar !

Malaysian University English Test (<b>MUET</b>) Guide | Malaysia Students

Malaysian University English Test (MUET), first launched in 1999 and administered by Malaysian Examinations Council (Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia), is a test to measure candidates' English language proficiency. MUET is taken by students who intend to pursue their tertiary education at local public universities since it is a mandatory test to gain entry into degree courses offered at all Malaysian public universities. This test is carried out twice a year, in April/May and October/November. Candidates usually register through their academic institutions while private candidates through State Education Departments (Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri), with a registration fee of RM60.

Unlike International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) which are globally accepted as the certification of English language proficiency, MUET is recognized only in Malaysia and Singapore (National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University).

MUET consists of four components: listening, speaking, reading and writing. New test specifications have been introduced officially and will apply from MUET October/November 2008 onwards while old test specifications will still apply for MUET October/November 2007 and April/May 2008. The table below shows the detailed comparison between new and old format of MUET.

Students that have taken MUET are eligible to be enrolled into degree courses offered at local public universities as long as their CGPA for Diploma STPM or Malaysian Matriculation examinations are good enough to fulfil the entry requirement. The difference between all these bands is that students from band 1 and 2 have to take two extra English courses during holidays while band 3 and 4 students take one extra course. Students with band 5 or 6 can skip the extra English course. Some competitive degree courses like medicine and pharmacy, however, require students to get band 5 or 6 in MUET.

&#39;Local varsities can opt to set own <b>MUET</b> target band scores&#39; ? DPM <b>...</b>

Posted: 27 Oct 2014 12:42 PM PDT

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Local universities will be entrusted to set their own target band scores for the Malaysian University English Test (MUET), beginning next year.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this would be the flexibility offered to these institutions under the transition period for them to accommodate the new required minimum English language criteria set for intakes of students.

Adding on, he said the new qualifications were determined following discussions among relevant stakeholders who called for better English proficiency among graduates.

"We need to ensure that our graduates are proficient in the English language. In Cyberjaya, 300 students of local IPTA (public institutions of higher learning) had been called for interviews by multi-national institutions – only seven passed as the rest could not converse well in English.

"This is one of the reasons why we need to raise the band scores. The Employers Association of Malaysia also said something must be done so that graduates of local universities could have a better command of English – not just being able to write, but also able to speak it fluently," he said in response to a question posed during a dialogue at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas)'s Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra here yesterday.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, stressed that multi-national corporations needed graduates who were proficient in English and as such, the minimum qualification set was not 'just an issue' among local universities.

"It is an issue to the whole country, not just at university level. Therefore, we decided to raise the qualification. If you enter the university with Band 2, after a couple of years, we expect you to go up to Band 3."

He said it would not be sensible for a student to maintain at Band 2 upon graduation.

When tabling Budget 2015 earlier this month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that starting next year, the general condition for student intake to higher learning institutions of at least Band 1 in MUET would be raised so as to increase their self-confidence and skills to communicate in English.

The new minimum qualification for Arts and Social Science studies has been upped to Band 2 (and
Band 3 to graduate) while for studies in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, it is elevated to Band 3 (Band 4 to graduate) and Band 4 for Law and Medicine (Band 5 to graduate).

New conditions for <b>MUET</b>: <b>Universities</b>&#39; senate given flexibility of <b>...</b>

SINTOK: Higher learning institutions (IPTA) in the country will be given flexibility in implementing the new qualifying conditions for the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) which will start next year.

Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the intake of students to these institutions was subject to approval by the senate of the respective universities, therefore, implementing the new conditions could be to the discretion of the senate.

"Actually, the statement made by the prime minister when tabling Budget 2015 (on the new qualifying conditions for MUET) recently, was well received by all the universities.

"However, allowance can be given to their senate because based on the Universities and University Colleges Act, the university senate has the power to determine the entry of students into the university," he said after a working visit to Universiti Utara Malaysia, here, yesterday.

Idris said the implementation would go on, but flexibility given now considering the current situation (short period for implementation).

When tabling Budget 2015, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that beginning next year, the general condition for student intake to the IPTA of at least Band 1 in MUET would be raised so as to increase their self-confidence and skills to communicate in the English language.

The new minimum qualification for Arts and Social Science studies is raised to Band 2 (and Band 3 to graduate) while for studies in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), it is raised to Band 3 (Band 4 to graduate) and Band 4 for Law and Medicine (Band 5 to graduate).

On another development, Idris said the ministry would meet with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's Institute of Malay World and Civilisation lecturer, Prof Dr Teo Kok Seong who disclosed that 604 Chinese and Indian participants of the National Service (NS) Training Programme could not speak Malay.

Idris said the ministry would thoroughly investigate why this situation happened and would take action to overcome the problem.

According to Teo, the study was made on 14,000 trainees at 79 NS training camps in 2010.

He said the inability of some trainees to communicate in nor understand Bahasa Melayu, resulted in the NS trainers being unable to deliver to them the module on nationhood and citizenship. — Bernama

My <b>MUET</b> Experience: Speaking (July 2013) | Intrinsic Musings

As a form 6 student, I am not exempted from taking the MUET exams. I know a lot of people dread it, but I'm just glad to have English classes in between my other boring subjects. So today, I had my Speaking Test and I was in the last group of the morning batch. That, is a relief 'cause my group mates and I had the time to practice, while waiting for our turn.

I was really surprised–in a good way–how my group mates were so diligent in practicing topic after topic and even though we couldn't know for sure whether our points were spot on, the main thing we wanted to achieve was to actually create a discussion in our Task B, rather than an individual performance of our own opinions, and I think we did that. I know for most people they have the problem of not being able to fully use up the 10 minutes in the discussion rounds, but oddly for us, we had the problem of not being able to fully express ourselves within the time given. But with practice, we gradually got better and I'm really thankful for having such hardworking friends who didn't mind nonstop practicing for 2 hours. Really, they're the best group mates I could ever ask for :)

I guess to whoever reading this and if you're taking MUET as well, I suggest for the Speaking part of it, you really have to cooperate with your group mates because Task B is where marks get deducted. My MUET teacher showed us a video of a group of actors doing their Speaking Test and we could see how the examiners placed their scores on the candidates. At Task A, they usually get high marks, one guy even had a high Band 5, but his marks were decreased in the group rounds, to a low Band 5, so were the other candidates. I know perhaps private candidates don't know who they are up against, but if you're like me, you know who your group mates are, I suggest you get as much practice with them as possible. It really helps.

When I got into the exam hall (or room) I asked one of the examiners whether she could inform me if there were only 10 seconds left in my Task A, so you know, I could be more prepared. But she said I should just talk and not worry about the time 'cause she would inform me when the time was up. Of course she would. That's what she was supposed to do. But I wanted to have a clear sense of time so that I could talk accordingly, and make a solid conclusion when it was close to the 2-minute mark. Then I remembered my teacher saying how some examiners would direct their stopwatches to the candidates so we could see the time. And so, I asked if she could do the same thing. She seemed a little surprised by my request, and also a little hesitant, saying how she needed to look at the time as well, but she didn't reject it. Since there were 2 examiners with us, she suggested both of them to place their stopwatches facing forward so each of them could look across, at the other person's stopwatch, instead of their own. And so, it was settled. We got to see the time while speaking. That was really a huge plus for us.

The question that we got–while I don't remember specifically–went something like this:

A good education can make an impact on students. Which of these makes the most impact on students?

(i)   Develop students' self-confidence
(ii)  Develop students' communication skills
(iii) Develop students' critical thinking
(iv) Develop students' leadership skills

If you've done a lot of past year questions before, you would realize this question is derived from one of the past year papers. I can't remember which, but I'm certain I've done it before. Unfortunately, it was a long time ago and I didn't look through the points before the exams, so the points I said was mostly blabber. Blabber that makes sense, sort of, I guess. I was Candidate A and I totally went blank the second I saw self-confidence 'cause I wasn't sure how to relate it to education. I simply crapped about science and history and whatnot. Even though I don't know whether my points were relevant, I'm happy I was able to make full use of the 2 minutes for my Task A. For Task B, I think we did well. How well, I can't tell, but yeah, well.

The rest of the three papers: Listening, Reading and Writing will be held on the 20th, and I'm having mixed feelings about it.

Till then.
