exam tips

Different countries, especially those belonging to the Commonwealth or those which have other historical ties with the United Kingdom, have different tests to assess students' proficiency in English at different levels. This is relevant for Malaysia as well.

In Malaysia, a test known as the Malaysian University English Test (MUET), run by the Malaysian Examinations Council, is the most widespread one for admission to different universities.

MUET results are primarily acceptable in Malaysia and neighboring Singapore. It is also accepted by different universities, such as the Nagoya University in Japan. Good MUET scores also help to gain admission to some of the reputed universities of Singapore, such as:

  • The National University of Singapore
  • Singapore Management University
  • Nanyang Technological University

All students who are hoping to secure admission in the Malaysian Universities must pass the MUET. The scoring requirements for different bands are separate. Students aspiring to secure admission in the medical stream are required to obtain at least a Band 5 score. However, those who are planning to study law are required to obtain at least a Band 4. MUET is not just a prerequisite for aspiring university students. It is also required to be taken by teachers and police officers who desire to get a promotion and a salary raise.

A few details about MUET

  • Currently held thrice a year, in the months of March, July and November
  • Around 85,000 students take the test every year
  • Registrations can be completed at the State Education Department or online
  • Has four sub sections:
    • Reading
    • Writing
    • Listening
    • Speaking
  • The highest possible score are:
    • 120 for Reading
    • 90 for Writing
    • 45 for Listening and Speaking

Scores obtained by the candidates are graded into bands with Band 1 being the lowest and Band 6 the highest. It is never easy to score the best marks in MUET. It requires excellent command over the English language. The examinees need to speak fluent and accurate English and express themselves clearly in the language. Moreover, the exam also tests the understanding of the language and its context. Based on the proficiency of the examinee in the language, they are marked in the exam. Following are the different criteria of the marks given to the examinees:

Band 6: The candidate is required to score marks between 260 and 300. They need to have excellent command over English as well as the ability to express themselves fluently and accurately. It is difficult to score Band 6 marks if the candidate does not have exceptional command over English.

Band 5: This requires the examinee to score between 220 and 259, He is also required to be a good user of English with above-average command of the language as well as good ability of understanding the language and contexts.

Band 4: The participant gets Band 4 when their marks remain between 180 and 219. He is regarded as fairly competent in the language with reasonably good ability to express himself in it, although there might be a few inaccuracies.

Band 3: The participant getting Band 3 scores between 140 and 179 and is regarded as capable of expressing themselves modestly in the language with occasional inaccuracies

Band 2: Marks between 101 and 139 is considered to comprise the Band 2 score. The participant scoring this is regarded as having limited command and understanding of the language, with multiple inaccuracies.

Band 1: A user scoring in Band 1 gets marks below 100 and is regarded as having very poor understanding of the language and its contexts.

Here are a few proven ways in which you can maximize your chances of doing well in MUET:

Read Extensively:It is extremely important to read as much English as possible to do well in MUET. There are very reputed English magazines like Reader's Digest, Time and others, which are nowadays available online as well. You will often find that MUET examination papers use articles from these renowned magazines. Reading English newspapers is of paramount importance as well. Subscribe to newspapers like New Straight Times, The Edge as well as the Star. Try to read at least one newspaper completely everyday.

While reading, keep a notepad with you and keep noting down any new words and phrases that you come across. Later look up the dictionary for the meaning of the word.

Improve Your Vocabulary:It is very important to have a good vocabulary. While reading extensively from all sorts of sources, both print and online, consult the dictionary when you do not know the meaning of a particular word. It helps even more if one routinely reads books like 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis. This is because, such books are specifically written with the goal of improving vocabulary.

Begin Practicing in Advance: Even if a student has a fairly good command over both spoken and written English, it is extremely important to start preparing well in advance. Do not procrastinate. Give yourself a few months for preparation. For example, if you are taking the examinations in March, start preparing in December and so on. There are a few good quality books, such as Oxford and Longman workbooks, which will help you to prepare for the tests. Take practice tests and try to improve your score every time.

Many test takers dread dealing with standardized test questions in the true/false format, as they think that these types of questions are more difficult than the other standardized test questions. True/false questions can be tricky and it is important that you pay very close attention to the details of each question before you mark your answer.

Standardized Test Taking Tips for True/False Questions:

  • Don't skim over true/false questions. Carefully read every word of the question, keeping in mind that the tiniest detail can affect the answer.
  • Pay attention to negative words and prefixes (such as un, non, etc.) that impact the meaning of a statement.
  • Watch for double negatives, such as "not unlikely." If an event is "not unlikely," that means it is in fact a likely occurrence.
  • Watch for qualifying modifiers (words like sometimes, usually, probably, might, etc.) tenc to be used in true statements.
  • Watch for extreme modifiers (words like always, never, absolutely, only, no one, the best, the worst, etc.) that may make a statement false that seems at first glance to be true.
  • Remember that questions that are only partially true are in fact false.
