KMP life : My First Experience with Malaysian University English Test

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 03:38 AM PDT

Hello everyone,

This week I am hell busy for my final examination on this sem! I am sure who are reading this entry post had already take the speaking test of MUET or you are not. Well, for those who not taking MUET for speaking test yet, you're lucky because I am going to share you about the tip to get prefect score here. But before this, I am really want to share with you guys about what is MUET and my first experience with those test.

The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) is a competency test in the English language. The MUET paper is a compulsory paper which must be taken by students who wish to pursue a first degree course in any local institution of higher learning in Malaysia. Since 2012, this test had been three times a year : in March, July and November.

How do I get there? I don't know. I just follow the KMP instruction to register for MUET. So this is a slip to prove that you're not fake and verified candidate. The slip looks like this:

At first, many of student didn't noticed that there are the rules which all candidate cannot bring any of communication form such as mobile phone, so the examiners (actually not examiners) but the teacher from others school which have very funny characters for give handle of stress to the candidates in waiting room before turn of the speaking test. They asked to switch off and put in front, on the table.

So, my group started at first who were including of my classmate Aiman, Farah, Amirah and me. Luckily, I think our group begins fluently which all candidates keep talking non-stop with their idea because the topic given was quiet easy. The topic was about how to faces the emergency situation.

In the task B, we must choose one of the best way to faces the emergency situation. In conclusion we unable to reach the solid decision which 2 of us choose agree then the others disagree. Anyways, I think we all satisfied with our presentation in speaking test of MUET here. I think. So good luck for the MUET candidates!

Our face after the speaking test. Why I am looking ugly here?

If you are noticing, recently I was update my blog using English language, right? This is because I want to improve the English language by myself then yes, of course it is broken but at least I am trying, right teacher? Teacher, I need you personally to correct my English. If you're not understand then you're die. Muahaha, just kidding, please use google translate at the side of my board blog. So,thank you for reading and please free to ask the question below!

Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Yes, I have sat for the exam and scored band 3. Do you think I am qualified to give out some tips?

Well, actually I'm not going to share the tricks for answering MUET papers, but more on sharing my past experience when sitting for MUET. I think this post is very suitable to be read by UIA students especially. If you feel like reading this post is wasting your time and this post isn't helpful, then you are free to leave. Hehe.

For UIA students, err, I'm telling you that MUET isn't that useful in UIA. Although if you scored band 6 either, once you enrolled to UIA, you will need to sit for special English test named English Placement Test (EPT). No automatic exemption for you. For CFS students, you have nothing to worry about if you have been exempted from the test.

For other public + private institutions, MUET is a MUST for you.

I took my MUET exam last year, final year session, at UIA PJ.

Speaking

My speaking assessment was held earlier than writing and the rest. During speaking test, I was given a topic on how to curb disciplinary problems in school. When presenting my point of view, I was stammering throughout the section A and freely the examiners deducted my marks. So sad.

For speaking test, it consists of two tasks. A and B. (or 1 and 2? forgot already).

 • Task A : You are required to present your point of view based on the topic discussed with your given position.
 • Task B : Group discussion. You are required to discuss in your group about choosing the best method/suggestion within stipulated time. You may use others' point and argue nicely with correctly used terms e.g. (Sorry for interrupting, but....). Google for more commonly used terms in speaking test! For UIA students who have sat for EPT (English Placement Test), this part is just similar to our speaking test. Just follow the rule!
Some useful tips:

 1. Please! DO NOT CONQUER the whole conversation. The test is for 4 candidates, not for you only. Don't you feel annoyed if someone dominates the talk without giving any chance for you to talk?
 2. Prioritize your fluency first, then grammar. Although grammar is very important, but don't let it affect your fluency and eloquence.
 3. If possible, be the one who leads the conversation, this may give you more marks.
 4. The more you counter others' view, the more marks you may get. Make sure your points are logic to counter others' points.
 5. Make sure you do understand the question so that you won't blabber too much with unnecessary points. A girl in my group, she asked the instructors about the topic in which she didn't understand after presenting her point. The instructors gave face gesture among themselves and asked the girl to perform in the next task. Pity on her.
 6. You can watch some demos on MUET Speaking test at [here].

Writing

For writing, you will need to write two essays.

 • First essay : Analysis essay. You need to study the given stimuli (usually a graph and a table). Then summarize and write about them, in X words (forgot already). If you exceeded the limit, the rest of the points will be left unread. For this essay, you should include the specific way of writing and correct techniques. If you don't follow the techniques, your marks will be deducted despite having good grammar and wide vocabulary. *The most detested part in MUET*
 • Second essay : Opinion-based essay. Writing about argumentative essay. My topic last time was about arranged marriage. Do you agree? lol. Many friends smiled while writing the essay. Huh.

I have no idea about the correct techniques that must be used. Go and find some other resources to know about writing format.

It is good if you read a lot. By reading, you can enrich your general knowledge. This may be useful to relate your essay with additional quotes and facts that you know.

Do more practice on grammar also. Grammar is the backbone of English.

Reading

Reading part, the part that will make you drowsy. I advise you to bring some drinking water into the examination hall so that you won't have your beauty sleep during the exam.

How to answer reading questions? Simple! You need more exercises. The more exercises you do, the easier for you to tackle the question. Bring some highlighters, and highlight for any hints that you found.

My skill on answering reading paper: I didn't read the whole text, but simply jumped into the questions straight away to avoid reading those that-so-called bed time story, and looked for the answers on the text by using skimming and scanning skill (very important reading skill). Google it!

Listening

The only things that you need are a pencil/pen and an eraser. If possible, you may dig your ear and clean the earwax that blocks/limits your hearing capability because you need your ear and brain to work together.

During the exam, make sure you focus 100% on the radio and let your brain think faster. The radio will read out any conversations, advertisements, podcast, etc. The information that you need to fill up may differ but same meaning, so you need to think very fast. If you missed, don't panic! Just go ahead. The radio will read out twice, so no worry. Use your common sense for the missing parts, don't leave them empty!

*********************************************************************************

These tips perhaps aren't that good and helpful as what you expected them to be, because I'm not a teacher/lecturer/examiner who teaches and marks MUET papers. I'm sharing this based on my previous experience when I was taking MUET. I didn't really put my interest during the exam because it is not really important for UIA students. For us, as long as you have sat for the exam, then you're free to get through your study in UIA. No required bands for us, except for some critical courses: Medical, Dentistry, Pharmacy (minimum band 3).

For better tips, just google for International English test (IELTS/TOEFL) to see some useful tricks that could be used in MUET.

Good luck anyway! :D

p/s: very bad writing, I know...

The first post in 2014, shall be dedicated to my MUET results!

I don't know how to describe my feelings. Take for granted? Relieved? Happy? Satisfied?

Anyways, I do feel very grateful for it. Many friends of mine got Band 4, and some even scored Band 3 (which really kicks them down into the abyss of depression). Sigh, what to do? MUET is a very standardised exam with a strict marking scheme where only the strong ones will survive, unlike any other typical matriculation exam for which the standard is always dependent on average nationwide results.

Knowing that my standard will be about a high Band 4, so I just tell the world I'm aiming for Band 4, with a "I-don't-give-a-damn" look, but who knows my little pump inside me is pounding like crazy! Deep down I really hoped to get a Band 5, and I did! Before this I tend to screw Reading and Writing Task 1 up, but seems like that day when I sat for the exam I didn't (if I did, at least not too much!). I thought I did better in speaking, but turns out the score ain't that high.

Band 5 ranges from 220 - 259. So my score is just merely higher than 220. Praise the Lord! I shall throw my own party!

Assalamualaikum

Today I would like to briefly speak out of my opinion regarding MUET. Darn ! What is MUET? Its' Malaysian University English Test. I have taken this test as I was doing my Foundation TESL in UiTM Kuantan couple of years ago.

Yesterday I saw one of my lecturer stated that more than half of the students who're doing Foundation in Law failed to gain band 4 in MUET and it is one of the requirement for the students to further their studies in higher level IF they wanted to study LAW or TESL.

In my opinion... IN MY OPINION... you can't judge the students ability just with one TEST. Oh no! its FOUR test with speaking, listening, writing and reading. And another "Oh no!" because you can't be too stupid not to get band 4. Yea yea yea! Hell right! Getting band 4 is a piece of cake. Secret recipe cake I guess? Or my future fountain wedding cake? *yummy*

To be honest, my MUET result did not enlighten my world. I can still remember as I was sitting for the listening test. I was not feeling well. I kept coughing. I had fever at that time due to some hard work done for 2 weeks before that. I was too weak. Plus, my mom was not there at that moment. She was in Mekah for a couple of weeks. I coming out non stop and my face turned red as the cili padi. *spicy* I can see Yan looked at me and asked me either I'm doing good. Hey ! Do I need to tell this? The moment I felt my whole body is going to burst out? No no no.. MAJLIS PEPERIKSAAN MALAYSIA would not like to hear my story. They are only interested my with result. Is it their fault? Of course no. It is my fault. Totally my fault. For not taking care of myself. it is MY FAULT. No doubt !!!

Because of MUET, my TESL's friends went studying separately. Around of applause for those who managed to pursue their bachelor in TESL education. *tepuk amoi-amoi amai-amai*

There was one friend I still wonder what is he doing at this moment. He was quite brilliant. But I am not sure if he managed to continue his study or he stops just right there. *one story telling*

There were also my friends who were very fluent in English. Can't beat them. My english is too simple. I don't really have bombastic words cause I will always forget. *ka-ching* They were very fluent and speak better English but they do not have the chance to study TESL.

So, for those who have the ambition of studying Foundation in TESL or LAW. Prepare yourself from now on. Everything is going to be your responsibility. And your luck. Seriously? Luck? It is actually the will of God.

And MUET, for sending me to UiTM KBM (kota bandaraya Melaka) and MSU (Management and Science University). I should thank you and hug you tighly. *xoxo*

InshaaAllah... The best plan, is the plan of GOD
Allah s.w.t
The One and Only God.

A quick history of MUET

MUET is t he acronym for Malaysian University English Test, put into place in 1999 by Malaysian Examination Council (MEC), based in Selayang, Selangor. The paper contains four main parts, catering for all much needed communicative skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Since its inception 15 years ago, a number of changes and tweaks had taken place to ensure MUET is kept relevant to the needs of the academia and industries.

In 2008, severa l big changes swept through the constructions of the subject that affects Listening, Reading and Writing. Gone are MCQ-based listening questions, so was summary and also long texts with fewer questions. In their places now are what we all see today which have stayed unchanged since the big sweep in 2008.

In February 2011, another big change took place - prior to that year, MUET exams only took place, in twice, July and November. But since that year, MUET exams can be taken thrice yearly; March, July and November.

It is interesting to note that today, MUET is the only public exam in school which charges RM100 (correct at the time of writing) per sitting in contrast with all the other free public exams.

To a number of universities, MUET band requirements are of utmost importance as the entry requirement for certain courses. For example, a minimum of band 4 is required for Law and Medicine courses, while other universities, exit requirements.

Which means, a student needs to achieve the min mum prof iciency band needed for the course before they can graduate. Hence, MUET exam can be considered as an integral part of any self-respecting Form 6, pre-university or university student.

Today, MUET plays a very important role as a yardstick to gauge the level of English proficiency among students and employers use MUET results to determine their future employee"s ability to communicate effectively in English.

Now let's look at the four papers in MUET that every candidate will sit for. In general, Speaking paper will be held ahead of Listening, Reading and Writing papers by about three weeks.

Listening (800/1)

This paper assess the ability to comprehend various types of oral text of varying length and level of complexity (content and language)

The following areas are tested: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation. Some of the possible genres are lecture, talk, discussion and news.

The format of the question includes MCQ, fill in the blanks and sentence completions.

Speaking (800/2)

This paper assess the ability to make individual presentations (2 minutes) and take part in group discussion (typically 10 minutes) on a wide range of contemporary issues.

The following areas are tested: accuracy,f luency, appropriacy, coherence and cohesion, use of language functions, managing a discussion and task fulfilment. Some of the possible issues are economy, education or health.

The format of the paper includes individual presentations and then group discussion.

Reading (800/3)

This paper assess the ability to comprehend various types of text of varying length and level of complexity (content and language).

The following areas are tested: comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Some possible genres are articles from journals, academic or literature texts.

The format of the questions includes six articles with 7 or 8 questions each (True/False/ Not stated and the standard higher order thinking MCQ questions). Most of the articles are written by native speakers of English with varying content and language complexity.

Writing (800/4)

This paper assess the ability to write various types of text covering a range of rhetorical styles.

The following areas are tested:

- accuracy

- appropriacy

- coherence and cohesion

- use of language functions

- task fulfilment.

The genres are report (question 1) and essay (question 2). The format of question 1 (report) is making analysis and sy nt hesis based on the data given (in the form of table, chart or graphs) all within 200 words and question 2 (essay) is writing an opinion-based essay or argumentative essay.

The Scoring Guide

Here's a quick scoring guide from Band 1 to 6

Aggregated Score Band The User is a.....

260-300 6 highly proficient user

220-259 5 proficient user

180-219 4 satisfactory user

140-179 3 modest user

100-139 2 limited user

below 1 very limited 100 user

Let's take a look how each paper contributes to the aggregated score (in percentage)

Listening - 15%

Speaking - 15%

Reading - 40%

Writing - 30%

In short, Reading paper contributes the biggest percentage towards the 300 score. However, as many candidates who have ta ken t he exam would attest, this paper is probably the most difficult paper to face due to two main factors.

One, the articles are written by native speakers, hence some language expressions, sentence structures and word choices are not very familiar to our candidates. And two, 45 questions with 7 or 8 articles prove a challenge to be completed within 90 minutes since this only give an average of 2 minutes or less for each question to be attempted not including reading the texts. As a result, some candidates give up halfway through the paper.

Well, I think I'll stop here for now. See you in the next pull out. Remember: Practice makes perfect!
